Location: Basildon – 3 days in office

Underwriting Operations handles new, existing and renewal household business via multi product and multi distribution channels including e-trade, sub coverholders and open market brokers to a defined criteria whilst ensuring Plum Underwriting provides excellent service to its brokers at all times.

Job Purpose

1. To develop and grow company's presence, GWP and income in the specified region by meeting or exceeding the budgeted new business and renewal retention rate for the region and if applicable, specific brokers in the region, whilst maintaining profitability for capacity
2. To operationally manage the specified regional trading team, and lead, inspire and motivate the trading underwriters to achieve the agreed Service Level Agreement (SLA)
3. To underwrite new business, renewal and mid term adjustments, trading with brokers in accordance with the underwriting authority awarded

Responsibilities:

▪ Day to day management of the specified regional trading team reporting to the Head of Underwriting Operations
▪ Develop, build and create new broker relationships in the specified region with regular performance visits, meetings and broker events
▪ Reporting monthly to the Senior Management Team on progress against regional budget performance and ongoing activity/developments/actions
▪ Work closely with other Regional Trading Managers to help ensure the overall underwriting operation is meeting its objectives, SLA’s and KPI’s
▪ Own, manage and maintain resource plans jointly with other Regional Trading Managers and ensure shift adherence to ensure adequate cover to support opening hours and SLA’s
▪ Reporting to the Heads of Underwriting to ensure consistency and delivery of technical stance and underwriting strategy
▪ Underwrite in accordance with the PUL Underwriting Authority & Guide and the Underwriting authority awarded in your Underwriting Passport
▪ Monitor, encourage and develop individuals’ performance and competency by way of regular 121’s, coaching, underwriting training and annual Personal Development Cycle (PDC) appraisal process
▪ Build training and development plans and facilitate ongoing underwriter training for new starters and existing staff
▪ Support the full range of PUL products where required
▪ Understanding and distribute MI and working with the Technical Management and Business Development teams to ensure we achieve budgeted GWP and target loss ratios
▪ Take underwriting referrals where directed
▪ To underwrite taking all necessary care to protect the interest of our capacity providers
▪ Measurably increase the team’s efficiency through continual process improvement and/or continual performance improvements
▪ Perform other duties from time to time as determined by the Senior Management Team.

We are strengthening our team at Plum Underwriting and looking for a Property/Real Estate Underwriter to join the team as we continue to grow.

You will be underwriting profitable renewals and new business on a day to day basis and assisting a brokers with the smooth running of existing policies.

The day to day:

  • Pro-actively managing renewals & new business quotes for a property/real estate book
  • Underwriting residential and commercial property/real estate risks within guidelines
  • Liaising with key stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Ensuring all documentations and systems are kept up to date and provided to supporting brokers in a timely manner
  • Actively engaging with brokers to ensure Plum are their first port of call on new business enquiries
  • Ensuring SLA’s are met and timely issuance of documentation

Your experience:

  • Ideally you’ll have 4-5 years’ experience successfully underwriting a mixed property portfolio with exposure to both commercial and residential real estate/property owners risks
  • A varied skill set that includes strong communication (both written and verbal), negotiation, analytical and IT skills.
  • Previous experience within an MGA or commercial insurance underwriting role

You will be responsible for the underwriting and selection of complex risks, in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with statutory and company requirements/guidelines to ensure profitability and business targets are met. You will also provide the conduit for information to flow between the underwriting operations team and the Technical Underwriting Department to ensure we continually adapt our underwriting footprint and stance in accordance with our brokers needs’ whilst protecting underwriting profitability.

The day to day:

▪ Manage complex and large new business and renewal cases
▪ Receive and respond to underwriting referrals from trading underwriting teams
▪ Assist in the development of underwriting capability within trading underwriting teams
▪ Provide market feedback, process improvement suggestions and other relevant information to Technical Underwriting team
▪ Understand loss ratio targets and ensure underwriting respects these targets
▪ Trade with Brokers to maximise conversion and retention
▪ Provide training where required
▪ Renewal/Existing and New Business Control
▪ Underwriting file reviews and feedback
▪ Understand/support and drive income, conversion and retention objectives
▪ Support the development of new products
▪ Carry out macro underwriting tasks as required
▪ Perform other duties from time to time as determined by the management

You will be responsible for real estate underwriting, in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with statutory and company requirements/guidelines to ensure profitability and business targets are met. You will also be responsible for achieving both New Business and Renewal GWP and Income budgets; and building new and maintaining existing relationships with our Brokers and partners to maximise conversion and retention whilst maintaining profitability.

The day to day:

▪ Underwrite new business and renewal cases in accordance with the internal underwriting guide and authority awarded
▪ Trade with Brokers to maximise conversion and retention
▪ Manage the day to day handling of Renewal/Existing and New Business
▪ Carry out underwriting file reviews and feedback
▪ Contribute to drive income, conversion and retention and meet associated objectives
▪ Support the development of new products
▪ Perform other duties from time to time as determined by the management
▪ Deal with incoming enquiries from clients, insurers and other third parties in a professional and timely manner

We are strengthening our team at Plum Underwriting and looking for a Trading Underwriter to join the team as we continue to grow.

The role of the Trading underwriter is to evaluate the risk and exposures of customers for new business, mid-term adjustments and renewals. Quoting, converting and retaining business to meet budget and underwriting performance targets for the range of specialist home insurance products throughout all Plum’s distribution channels, ensuring Plum provides excellent service to its brokers at all times.


The day to day:

▪ Underwrite in accordance with the Plum Internal Underwriting Guide and the Underwriting authority awarded
▪ Trade with Brokers to maximise conversion and retention within your authority
▪ Monthly reporting to Line Manager
▪ Renewal/Existing and New Business Control
▪ Take underwriting referrals from other offices where outside individuals level of authority
▪ Understand/support and drive income, conversion and retention objectives
▪ Conduct Peer Reviews as allocated and as per PP003 – UNDERWRITING PEER REVIEW PROCESS
